RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution accepting the approximated 1,000 units of baked goods (valued at $5,000) and $3,250 donation to the Fire Department from Bimbo Bakeries USA to purchase food and gift cards for the annual Holiday Food Drive Distribution.

Body

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Bimbo Bakeries USA has a history of being a generous donor and sponsor of several City programs and initiatives. Over the years, Bimbo Bakeries USA has made generous donations to the Parks and Recreation Department to support programs such as the Francisco Terrace Park renovation project, park improvements on Centennial Way, the Aquatics Program at Orange Memorial Pool, the Adult Day Care Program at Magnolia Center, and the annual Holiday Food Distribution.

The South San Francisco Fire and Police Departments provide an annual Holiday Food Distribution for low income families during the holiday season. Last year, the City hosted two food distributions on November 21, 2022 and December 20, 2022 which provided food to over 600 families. This year, Bimbo Bakeries USA generously donated over 1,000 units of pan breads, English muffins, and other snacks, with a retail value of $5,000, as well as a monetary donation of $3,250 to the Fire Department to purchase food and gift cards for the annual Holiday Food Distribution. Each family who participated in this event received produce boxes, chicken, eggs, milk, dry goods and two baked items donated by Bimbo Bakeries USA. Additionally, over 760 children were given $35 Target Gift Cards, and over 150 makeup kits were given to families with teenage girls.

FISCAL IMPACT

Funds from this donation will be received and expended from the Fire Department donation account. Receipt of these funds does not commit the City to ongoing funding.

RELATIONSHIP TO STRATEGIC PLAN

Acceptance of these donations will contribute to the City’s Strategic Plan under Priority #2: Quality of Life.

CONCLUSION

Receipt of these funds will offset the cost of the food and gift card purchases for the annual Holiday Food Drive. It is recommended that the City Council accept the approximated 1,000 units of baked goods (valued at $5,000) and monetary donation of $3,250 to support the City’s annual Holiday Food Drive.
