Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the acceptance of up to $10,000 in new furnishings in order to improve and upgrade the library's MakerSpace, plus the services of a design consultant, from the California State Library and the Southern California Library Cooperative and $500 from the South San Francisco Friends of the Library.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Library Department has been awarded a Maximizing Learning Spaces grant from a collaborative project between the California State Library and the Southern California Library Cooperative to work with a consultant to improve the Main Library's MakerSpace/Technology Learning Center area. The grant includes up to $10,000 in furniture and fixtures to create a dynamic space that can be easily configured to adapt to the variety of programming offered in the space. As part of the grant, the South San Francisco Friends of the Library has made a cash match donation of $500 to support the redesign.

The furniture currently in the space is bulky and hard to move and inadequate for the varied uses, forcing staff and patrons to work around its limitations. New furniture that is modular, easy to move or store, or otherwise adaptable will go a long way toward creating an exciting, engaging MakerSpace, sparking curiosity and inspiring the joy of reading while building confidence in the pursuit of knowledge.

FISCAL IMPACT
