Recommendation
It is recommended that the Parks and Recreation Commission be apprised of the Department's campaign to recognize and celebrate July as National Parks and Recreation Month in 2025.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Since 1985, the United States has celebrated Parks and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation and to recognize the more than 160,000 full-time parks and recreation professionals - along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers - who maintain our country's local, state and community parks. Parks and recreation agencies nationwide, including the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department, are recognizing the month with summer programs, events, contests, commemorations, and celebrations. The services that parks and recreation professionals provide are vital to our communities, from protecting open spaces and natural resources to helping fight obesity and providing activities and resources for all people. Parks and Recreation Month encourages everyone to reflect on the exponential value parks and recreation professionals bring to communities.

Throughout the month of July, the Department's social media pages will showcase the importance of parks, recreation, and human services. Additionally, staff will once again be hosting a Movie Night in the Park and a July is Parks and Recreation Month Field Day event at Orange Memorial Park, both on Friday, July 18. Additional activities are also being considered, including a suite of free classes and drop-in programs.

The Parks and Recreation Month campaign will include a presentation of a proclamation by the City Council that recognizes July as Parks and Recreation Month. The proclamation, which is available in Attachment 1, will be presented ...
