RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation
It is recommended that commissioners develop the agenda for the annual commission retreat.

Body
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Each commission and board with the City of South San Francisco is encouraged to partake in a retreat once per year to step away from their regular routine and responsibilities and to focus on self-reflection, skill development, team building, goal setting, or any other item of importance. At the April 2026 commission meeting, commissioners approved a motion to conduct their retreat on Monday September 21, 2026 (a regular scheduled meeting).

Commissioners also discussed potential topics to be discussed at the retreat. Potential topics included the following:

* Services for seniors who are veterans
* Reviewing and updating commission bylaws (specifically the alternate commissioner position)
* How to enhance commissioners' role as an advisory body to city council and city manager
* How to evolve or have more impact on the community

Additional potential topics and/or activities can be discussed for the retreat such as:

* Commissioner training
* Small group activities
* Identify priorities for the rest of the year and/or 2027
* Position strategically as advisory body to the City Council and Manager
* Clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Commission's officers
* Identify and recommend specific equity and inclusion action improvements
* Serve as community-city liaison to improve transparency
* Build partnerships including community networks and local organizations
* Deliver an annual work plan and report on initiative progress

Ideally, two to three activities or items will be identified and agreed upon to develop and produce an agenda for the retreat.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, commissioners will develop the agenda for the annual commission retreat.
