Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution approving a purchase agreement with Acme Radio Inc., for the purchase of 75 Bendix King portable radios and accessories in an amount not to exceed $350,000.00; and authorizing the City Manager to execute the purchase agreement on behalf of the City of South San Francisco.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Fire Department recommends the purchase of 75 Bendix King CMDP-150 portable radios and accessories. Fire Staff has selected Acme Radio Inc., as the recommended vendor based on review of products from three manufacturers and their lowest, most appropriate, responsive quote.
The South San Francisco Fire Department (SSFFD) provides a portable radio to each on-duty firefighter. The current SSFFD portable radios were purchased more than ten years ago. When purchased, our current radios were expected to have a service life of ten years. This has proven to be accurate now that the radios require more frequent repairs and increased maintenance costs. We expect the service life of the new portable radios to also be ten years and have planned accordingly by recommending placement of these items in the equipment replacement program.
Radio manufacturers Motorola, Kenwood and Bendix King were each evaluated. Bendix King was determined to be the preferred radio based on the above criteria (Attachment 2). In addition to our evaluation, Bendix King is a proven product that is also used by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).
