WHEREAS, the South San Francisco Fire Department ("SSFFD") has realized an increase in fires occurring in electrical vehicles that have proven to be challenging and complex due to their large amounts of lithium-ion batteries surrounded by hardened steel protective cases; and
WHEREAS, fires occurring in electrical vehicles produce significant amounts of toxic and hazardous smoke and water runoff, leading to negative environmental impacts as conventional fire suppression activities that require copious amounts of water to extinguish; and
WHEREAS, SSFFD has identified the need for specialized equipment designed to address current limitations with conventional firefighting equipment that requires significantly less water when responding to fires in electrical vehicles; and
WHEREAS, in 2025, SSFFD applied and received funding for specialized firefighting equipment and a transportation vehicle through the City and County of San Francisco Urban Area Security Initiatives Grant Program ("UASI") for purposes of addressing fires occurring in electrical vehicles; and
WHEREAS, the SSFFD now wishes to use those grant funds to address the identified operational constraints currently faced by the Department when responding to electrical vehicle fires.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco ("City") that the City Council hereby accepts $205,000 in grant funding from UASI to purchase specialized fire...
