BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
When the location of the New Aquatic Center project was first determined, it became necessary to relocate the Eternal Flame sculpture from its existing location to accommodate construction. Given the sculpture’s longstanding role as a memorial honoring veterans and its significance to the South San Francisco community, the City began evaluating how it could be carefully relocated, restored, and incorporated into a new setting that would preserve and enhance its commemorative purpose.
The relocation also provided an opportunity to consider the Eternal Flame within the context of the City’s broader effort to create a new Veterans Memorial at Orange Memorial Park. Planning for the memorial has included engagement with local veterans and community stakeholders over time to help inform the vision for a meaningful and enduring space honoring those who have served. Through this process, the Eternal Flame has remained an important element of the overall memorial concept and is intended to serve as a focal point of the new plaza.
As part of this effort, the City commissioned a condition and relocation assessment of the Eternal Flame sculpture. ARG Conservation Services Inc. was contracted to perform the sculpture assessment. Their assessment determined that the 7,000-pound sculpture’s structure was in fair condition; however, the mosaic surface was deteriorating and in need of complete resurfacing.
Rather than simply relocate the sculpture, the City is using the project as an opportunity to reintegrate the Eternal Flame as a focal point of a new Veterans Memorial. The new plaza will provide a dedicated ...
