WHEREAS, Sea Level Rise remains an environmental and economic threat to the San Francisco Bay Area, especially for coastal and bayside cities.
WHEREAS, in the last 100 years, Sea Level Rise in the Bay Area has risen over eight inches and the City of South San Francisco regularly experiences 1 foot King Tides at Oyster Point.
WHEREAS, the City of South San Francisco is proactively seeking remedies to mitigate against the threat of Sea Level Rise along our city’s shoreline;
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 272 (Laird) would require a local government in the coastal zone or within the jurisdiction of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) to implement sea level rise (SLR) planning and adaptation;
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 272 (Laird) prioritizes funding for local government projects that meet the state’s goal for approval of the required plans, among other things;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that the Mayor is authorized to send a letter in support of Senate Bill 272, as described in the accompanying staff report presented to the City Council on June 14, 2023.
