Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the acceptance of an additional $1,000 in grant funding for fiscal year 2024-25 from the Quality Improvement Grant from Quality Counts San Mateo County for the Big Lift Little Steps Preschool at the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center and amending the Parks and Recreation Department’s fiscal year 2024-25 Operating Budget pursuant to Budget Amendment Number 25.059.
Body
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The City of South San Francisco’s Little Steps Preschool is partially funded by the Big Lift grant from San Mateo County. As a Big Lift grant recipient, Little Steps Preschool is eligible for a Local Block Grant and/or Quality Improvement (QI) Grant from Quality Counts San Mateo County (QCSM). At the June 26, 2024 City Council meeting, City Council approved the acceptance of $2,275 in QI grant funding. This award was made because the City entered into a QCSM Participation Agreement and Little Steps Preschool is engaged in quality improvement activities through QCSM. The purpose of the QI grant is to help create action-oriented quality improvement plans and provide one-time resources to implement those plans. Grant awards are a one-time award based on the availability of funds. The City of South San Francisco Little Steps Preschool plans to use the QI Grant to purchase supplies such as outdoor play equipment to help children with their social emotional growth and gross motor development, as well as other curriculum support. The City has received a QI Grant bonus award in the amount of $1,000 for fiscal year 2024-25. The City will have received a total of $3,275 in QI Grant funding with the addition of this bonus award.
FISCAL IMPACT
Acceptance of the QI Grant in the amount of $1,000 will allow for the purchase of training and support services for preschool teachers as well as classroom supplies as required by the QCSM Participation Agreement. Grant funds will be used to amend the FY 2024-25 operating budget.
RELATIONSHIP TO STRATEGIC PLAN
Acceptance of these grant funds will contribute to the City’s Strategic Plan under the major focus area of creating a “Welcoming and Connected Community” by increasing access to childcare and supporting underserved communities.
CONCLUSION
It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the acceptance of $1,000 in grant funding for FY 2024-25 from the Quality Improvement Grant from Quality Counts San Mateo County for the Big Lift Little Steps Preschool at the Community Learning Center and amending the Parks and Recreation Department’s FY 2024-25 Operating Budget pursuant to Budget Amendment Number 25.059.
