Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the acceptance of grant funding of up to $2,000 from the Yiddish Book Center’s “Between Two Worlds” Public Libraries Program to support literary and cultural programming at the South San Francisco Public Library, amending the Library Department’s Fiscal Year 2025-26 Operating Budget and approving Budget Amendment Number 26.022.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The South San Francisco Public Library has been selected to participate in the Yiddish Book Center’s “Between Two Worlds” Public Libraries Program, a national initiative that brings Yiddish literature in translation to public libraries across the United States. The program is designed to foster vibrant cross-cultural dialogue, discussion, and literary enrichment in local communities.
As part of the program, the Library will host reading groups and related programming centered on selected titles of Yiddish literature in translation. The Yiddish Book Center will provide curated book selections, reading guides, virtual programs, and informational materials. Additionally, the Library will receive reimbursement of up to $2,000 for expenses related to guest speakers and enhanced programming.
A library staff member will attend a required orientation workshop at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, from November 2-4, 2025. Travel, lodging, and meals for the workshop will be covered by the Yiddish Book Center.
Programming will take place between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Promotional materials will acknowledge the Yiddish Book Center’s sponsorship.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds will be used to amend the Library Department’s current FY 2025-26 Operating Budget, with programs and materials reimbursable up to $2,000 upon submittal of receipts. Participation in this program does not commit the City to ongoing funding.
RELATIONSHIP TO STRATEGIC PLAN
Acceptance of this funding will contribute to the City’s Strategic Plan under Priority #6: Community Connections, by providing literary and cultural programming to the community.
CONCLUSION
Acceptance of this resolution will support literary and cultural programming at South San Francisco Public Library.
