Body
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The City of South San Francisco has over 600 volunteers that keep our City thriving. In 2022, the City of South San Francisco became a certified organization to recognize exceptional volunteers through the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PSVA). The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) to recognize the vital role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. The PVSA has continued under each administration, honoring the volunteers who are using their time and talents to solve some of the toughest challenges facing our nation.
To honor all of its volunteers, the City organized a Volunteer Gala which took place on April 7, 2023. With over 250 volunteers in attendance, over 130 volunteers were awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, 39 volunteers recognized with the Mayor’s award, and eight volunteers were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. The Gala provides attendees with a free dinner and minor items of recognition for the people celebrated for their volunteer efforts.
To support this initiative, AbbVie donated $10,000, the South San Francisco Scavenger Company donated $10,000, Amgen donated $5,000, Genentech donated $5,000, and the South San Francisco Rotary Club donated $1,000.
FISCAL IMPACT
Donated funds will be used to amend the City Manager Department’s FY 2022-2023 Operating Budget per Budget Amendment 22.074. Receipt of these funds does not commit the City to ongoing funding.
RELATIONSHIP TO STRATEGIC PLAN
Acceptance of these donations will contribute to the City’s Strategic Plan under Priority #6: Community Connections - Community anchored by active volunteer organizations, vibrant community and civic events, tied together through strong city communications.
CONCLUSION
Acceptance of these donations will be used to offset the Volunteer Gala event costs. It is recommended that the City Council accept the $10,000 in donation funding from AbbVie, $10,000 from South San Francisco Scavenger Company, $5,000 from Amgen, $5,000 from Genentech, and $1,000 from the South San Francisco Rotary Club to support the South San Francisco Volunteer Gala and approve Budget Amendment 22.074.
