Resolution authorizing the acceptance of $25,000 from Genentech, Inc. to support the Library’s Summer Learning Challenge 2027, amending the Library Department’s fiscal year 2026-27 operating budget and approving Budget Amendment Number 27.0205.

WHEREAS, the purpose of summer learning programs is to address summer learning loss among children and teens by focusing on increasing summer reading participation, advancing literacy, and supporting academic performance by engaging children, teens, and families in reading and enrichment activities, and promoting library use; and
WHEREAS, Genentech, Inc., as part of their Community Giving Priority, has partnered with the Library in awarding $25,000 to fund Summer 2027 free book distributions and programming; and
WHEREAS, acceptance of this funding will contribute to City Council’s Priorities Action Plan under the major focus area of “Welcoming and Connected Community” by supporting community engagement, learning, and library programs for youth.; and
WHEREAS, free books will be available in Chinese, English, Spanish, and Tagalog for distribution in the Library, schools within the South San Francisco Unified School District, Parks and Recreation preschools, as well as at other programs and events to be scheduled from May through August 2027; and
WHEREAS, staff recommends the acceptance of the grant in the amount of $25,000 to support the 2027 Summer Learning Challenge; and
WHEREAS, the funds will be used to amend the fiscal year 2026-27 operating budget of the Library Department via Budget Amendment Number 27.025; and
WHEREAS, funds not expended in fiscal year 2026-2027 will be carried over into fiscal year 2027-28, and receipt of these funds does not commit the City to ongoing funding.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of South San Francisco does hereby accept $25,000 from Genentech, Inc. to support the Library’s Summer Learning Challenge 2027.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council approves Budget Amendment Number 27.025 to amend the Library Department’s 2026-27 operating budget.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager or their designee to execute the documents necessary to accept the funding and take any other actions necessary to carry out the intent of this resolution on behalf of the City Council, subject to approval as to form by the City Attorney.
